A century of censuses: Long-term trends from the Census of Population and Dwellings to 2013 brings together a range of indicators from censuses over the years. They show how New Zealand’s population and dwellings have changed over time.
Some variables are not available for all census years, so we have included the longest time period possible.
For some counts, we've been able to include information from as far back as the 1800s. However, some variables are only available for certain years – for example, we only introduced ‘address five years ago’ in 1971.
The first sets of indicators, on the topics 'Population' and 'Dwellings and households', show how New Zealand has changed dramatically since the 19th and 20th centuries, both in the size and diversity of the population, and the types of homes we live in.
In the lead-up to the 2018 Census, we will add sections on topics such as work and education, and health.
