We gather data on many topics, including income, housing, the environment, the economy, education, and social well-being. The information we provide with the data helps people decide where to locate a business, what products to sell, and where we need schools and hospitals. The data also indicates our environmental progress and quality of life and contributes to Māori cultural and economic wealth.
We also support other agencies to produce statistics for policy decisions on the economy, society, and the environment.
We collect information in several ways – we carry out the censuses, including the Census of Population and Dwellings, we survey people at home and in businesses, and we collect data from organisations. We collect the information securely and keep it safe.
We are committed to responding to the statistical needs of Māori as tāngata whenua in Aotearoa New Zealand.
