Statistics New Zealand is currently working on the review and redevelopment of business demographic statistics. The first stage of the project investigates the feasibility of producing a new range of outputs from the Longitudinal Business Frame (LBF), which was developed as part of the Linked Employer-Employee Data project (LEED). Basing business demography statistics on the LBF, rather than directly on a snapshot of the Business Frame, has the advantages of enhancing methods for the identification of enterprise births and deaths and increasing population coverage. The goal is to produce statistics that better meet the needs of users.
This technical report details the creation of an experimental series of business demography statistics based on the LBF. It discusses the underlying methodologies developed to construct the LBF and shows how an enhanced business demographic series that aligns with international best practice can be derived.
Statistics NZ welcomes user feedback on the methods and results presented in this report.
