Monthly change

Food prices fell 0.8 percent in the April 2017 month. After seasonal adjustment, food prices fell 0.2 percent.

In April 2017 compared with March 2017:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices rose 4.2 percent (also up 4.2 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 1.7 percent.
  • Grocery food prices fell 2.2 percent (down 2.1 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 2.7 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.1 percent.

Annual change

Food prices increased 0.2 percent in the year to April 2017.

In April 2017 compared with April 2016:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices increased 3.0 percent.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices decreased 1.5 percent.
  • Grocery food prices decreased 0.2 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices decreased 3.1 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices increased 1.9 percent.

Key average prices

  • A kilogram of broccoli was $9.41 in April 2017, compared with $4.93 in March 2017 and $6.26 in April 2016.
  • A kilogram of pork chops was $13.84 in April 2017, compared with $15.68 in March 2017, and $15.89 in April 2016.
  • A 250-gram pack of crackers was $2.91 in April 2017, compared with $3.15 in March 2017.
