Student Loan Data Integration Project

In 2001 Statistics New Zealand undertook a trial integration of selected sets of information relating to the student loan scheme. This trial integration showed that probabilistic matching was feasible, so Statistics New Zealand then completely integrated selected datasets to create an integrated dataset on student loan borrowers. This dataset will better inform strategic policy, financial risk management, financial reporting and forecasting.

Two reports have been produced outlining the methodology and procedure used to integrate the data. These reports aim to:

  • Describe the methodology used to integrate the datasets and the decisions made about what to match, and report on the outcomes of the matching.
  • Examine the quality of the links created by the matching process.
  • Compare the results from integration done in previous years.

The integration project was completed successfully, and Statistics New Zealand aims to update the resulting dataset regularly. Statistics New Zealand undertakes to inform about major changes to the methodology used in the data integration.
