Key facts

For March 2017, compared with March 2016:

  • National guest nights were down 3.1 percent.
  • Domestic guest nights were down 5.6 percent, and international guest nights were unchanged.
  • North Island guest nights were down 1.3 percent, and South Island guest nights were down 5.4 percent.
  • Nine of the 12 regional areas had fewer guest nights.
  • Three of the four accommodation types had fewer guest nights.

In 2016 Easter occurred in March. In 2017, this occurred in April.

For the year ended March 2017, national guest nights were up 3.2 percent from the March 2016 year.

The trend for national guest nights showed little movement in March 2017. Seasonally adjusted guest nights rose 2.3 percent.
