Key facts

In August 2017 compared with August 2016 visitor arrivals were up 12,800 to 234,000.

The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

  • Australia (up 5,200)
  • China (up 3,100)
  • United States of America (down 2,200)
  • Indonesia (up 1,200)
  • Hong Kong (up 1,100).

Overseas trips by New Zealand residents were up 16,900 to 252,100.

The biggest changes were in departures to:

  • Australia (up 6,300)
  • Fiji (up 2,000)
  • United Kingdom (up 1,200)
  • Thailand (down 1,000).

Permanent and long-term arrivals were up 100 to 10,000.

Permanent and long-term departures were up 400 to 4,900.

Seasonally adjusted figures showed a net gain of 5,500 migrants.

In the August 2017 year compared with the August 2016 year:

  • visitor arrivals numbered 3.67 million, up 311,500 (9 percent)
  • New Zealand residents departed on 2.79 million trips overseas, up 279,700 (11 percent)
  • permanent and long-term arrivals were 132,200, up 7,200 (6 percent)
  • permanent and long-term departures were 60,100, up 4,200 (8 percent)
  • the net gain in migrants was 72,100, up 3,000.
