Infoshare (choose Population and Population Estimates from the homepage) has time series of population estimates, from 1996 onwards, for subnational areas (regional council areas, territorial authority areas, and urban areas).
Notes
The population at 30 June in each census year (1996, 2001, and 2006) is based on the census usually resident population count, updated for residents missed or counted more than once by the census (net census undercount); residents temporarily overseas on census night; and births, deaths, and net migration between census night and the date of the estimate.
Subnational population estimates at 30 June 2007–12 were obtained by updating the base population (at 30 June 2006) of each area, for births, deaths, and net migration. Population estimates after 30 June 2006 will be revised following results from the 2013 Census of Population and Dwellings.
