Trust in government institutions

Why is this important for social statistics?

We measure this because when people trust government institutions (the public service), they’re more likely to take part in government processes. For example, they’re more likely to:

  • vote
  • use the services they’re entitled to
  • provide information about themselves that allows government to provide effective services
  • pay taxes, user charges, and licence fees.

This indicator measures the proportion of the population who, overall, trust the public service.
