What is the Classification Coding System (CCS)?

The CCS is a coding tool that provides coding for all of Statistics New Zealand's standard classifications.

This coding tool was developed and is supported by Statistics NZ. The coder can be used for coding all New Zealand Standard classifications, including occupation, and for geographic coding (geocoding).

What features does the CCS have?

The CCS provides:

  • a system for coding geographic address and standard classifications
  • a stand-alone and LAN/Network coding tool
  • an automatic coding function (which can be done using a delimited text file)
  • a stand-alone capability
  • a way of writing output to MS Access or MS Excel.

What classifications does the CCS contain?

The following classifications are all included in both versions of the CCS – CCS Standard and CCS Geo:

  • Country (2 Alpha) – NZSCC2A99
  • Country (4 Numeric) – NZSCC4A99
  • Currency – CURRENCY
  • Ethnicity – ETHNIC05
  • Industry – ANZSIC96/ANZSIC06 dual-coding
  • Industry – ANZSIC06
  • Industry – ANZSIC96
  • Iwi – IWI
  • Language – LANGUAGE99
  • Occupation – NZSCO99/ISCO dual-coding
  • Occupation – NZSCO99 (3 digit)
  • Occupation – ANZSCO (6 digit)
  • Occupation – NZSCO99/ANZSCO dual coding
  • Occupied dwelling type - OCCDWELTYPE
  • Qualifications (Post-school qualifications – level) – NZREG
  • Qualifications (Post-school qualifications – subject) – NZSCED.FIELD
  • Qualifications (School qualification) – NZREG.SCHOOL
  • Relationship – RELAT99
  • Religious Affiliation – RELIGAFF
  • Research (Field of study) – ANZSRC.FOR
  • Research (Socio-economic objective) – ANZSRC.SEO

The following geographic classifications are only included in the CCS Geo:

  • Locations
  • Streets

Intellectual property for the software resides with Statistics NZ. Please note that the content of the codefiles (in the CCS) contain descriptions from a variety of sources, including specific survey responses and misspellings. The inclusion of these descriptions in no way implies or represents the expression of any opinion by Statistics NZ.

Downloadable files:

There are two downloadable installation files for the CCS: one is CCS Standard and one is CCS Geo. Both include codefiles that are up-to-date as at 1 August 2009. These downloads will be replaced with updated versions in early January 2010, and annually following that update.

The CCS Standard is 8.9MB in size and does not contain the geographic classifications as specified above.

The CCS Geo is 13.1MB in size and contains all the classifications listed above, including the geographic classifications.

When you download the CCS, it is important that you also download and read the licensing agreement.
