Key facts
- In May 2018, 3,407 new dwellings were consented – the highest monthly number since 3,447 in June 2004.
- The 1,530 new dwellings consented in Auckland is the highest monthly number since 1,945 were consented in October 2002.
- The seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings rose 7.1 percent, following a 3.6 percent fall in April, and 13 percent rise in March.
New dwelling consents
In May 2018, 3,407 new homes were consented:
- 2,167 stand-alone houses (including 710 in Auckland)
- 531 townhouses, flats, and units (including 258 in Auckland)
- 454 apartments (including 419 in Auckland)
- 255 retirement village units (including 143 in Auckland).
The seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings consented rose 7.1 percent. For houses only, the seasonally adjusted number rose 6.5 percent.
The number of new homes consented in Auckland peaked in October 2002 when 1,945 new homes were consented, boosted by 1,206 apartments.
Nationally, in the year ended May 2018, 32,628 new dwellings were consented – up 6.5 percent compared with the May 2017 year. Regional totals were:
- Auckland – 12,274 (up 18 percent from the year ended May 2017)
- Waikato – 3,429 (down 5.2 percent)
- Wellington – 2,661 (up 23 percent)
- Rest of North Island – 5,866 (down 0.6 percent)
- Canterbury – 4,912 (down 7.4 percent)
- Rest of South Island – 3,485 (up 6.5 percent).
The trend for the number of new homes consented in Auckland has been generally rising since February 2017. In Canterbury, the trend appears to be falling as the post-earthquake rebuild winds down.
Non-residential consents
In the year ended May 2018, non-residential building consents totalled $6,804 million, up 4.2 percent from the May 2017 year.
In the year ended May 2018, the non-residential building types with the highest consent values, and change on the year ended May 2017 were:
- education buildings – $1,193 million, up 6.7 percent (growth led by Auckland and Canterbury)
- offices, administration, and public transport buildings – $1,045 million, down 20 percent (drop led by Wellington and Auckland regions)
- shops, restaurants, and bars – $965 million, up 31 percent.
