Key facts
For all business financial data (BFD) industries, in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter:
- sales were $189 billion, down $1.3 billion (0.7 percent)
- purchases were $133 billion, down $888 million (0.7 percent)
- salaries and wages were $31 billion, up $593 million (1.9 percent)
- operating profit was $25 billion, down $1.0 billion (4.0 percent).
When adjusting for seasonal effects, in the September 2024 quarter compared with the June 2024 quarter:
- sales in 6 of the 14 New Zealand Standard Industrial Output Classification (NZSIOC) level 1 industries increased
- electricity, gas, water, and waste services (up $819 million); wholesale trade (down $457 million); and construction (down $429 million) industries had the largest movements in sales.

Manufacturing
Volumes are calculated by removing the effect of price changes from sales values.
In the September 2024 quarter, when adjusted for seasonal effects against the previous quarter:
- the volume of total manufacturing sales fell 1.2 percent, following a 0.3 percent rise in the June 2024 quarter
- the value of total manufacturing sales fell $43 million (0.1 percent), following a $296 million (0.9 percent) rise in the June 2024 quarter.
In actual terms, the volume of finished goods stocks (not seasonally adjusted) for total manufacturing rose 4.4 percent ($389 million) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
In actual terms, total manufacturing purchases fell $124 million (0.6 percent), and salaries and wages rose $52 million (1.1 percent) compared with the September 2023 quarter.

Wholesale trade
When adjusted for seasonal effects, the total value of wholesale trade sales fell 1.2 percent ($457 million) in the September 2024 quarter, following a 1.3 percent ($503 million) fall in the June 2024 quarter.
The actual total value of wholesale trade stocks held at 30 September 2024 was $18 billion, down $905 million (4.7 percent) from 30 September 2023.
In actual terms, total wholesale trade purchases fell $929 million (2.8 percent), and salaries and wages rose $41 million (1.6 percent) compared with the September 2023 quarter.

For the industry breakdowns below, we currently only have seasonally adjusted data for the sales values. The purchases and salaries and wages values are actual data and therefore year-on-year movements are used.
Forestry, fishing, and agricultural services
Total sales in this category were $3.5 billion, up $90 million (2.6 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases rose $19 million (0.8 percent), and salaries and wages rose $25 million (4.6 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
By industry the sales movements were:
- forestry and logging – up $69 million (5.3 percent)
- fishing, aquaculture, and support services for agriculture, forestry, and fishing – up $20 million (1.0 percent).
Mining
Total sales in this category were $1.2 billion, up $77 million (6.9 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases fell $8.3 million (1.2 percent), and salaries and wages rose $20 million (11 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
Electricity, gas, water, and waste services
Total sales in this category were $8.7 billion, up $819 million (10 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases rose $2.1 billion (49 percent), and salaries and wages rose $41 million (6.9 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
Construction
Total sales in this category were $24 billion, down $429 million (1.8 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases fell $1.4 billion (8.0 percent), and salaries and wages fell $43 million (1.0 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
Retail trade and accommodation
Total sales in this category were $30 billion, down $209 million (0.7 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases fell $243 million (1.0 percent), and salaries and wages rose $7.0 million (0.2 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
By industry the sales movements were:
- retail trade – down $182 million (0.7 percent)
- accommodation and food services – down $7.1 million (0.1 percent).

Transport, postal, and warehousing
Total sales in this category were $10 billion, down $113 million (1.1 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases fell $167 million (2.7 percent), and salaries and wages rose $89 million (4.2 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
Information media and telecommunications
Total sales in this category were $4.5 billion, down $104 million (2.3 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases fell $138 million (4.7 percent), and salaries and wages rose $18 million (2.4 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
Rental, hiring, and real estate services
Total sales in this category were $9.2 billion, up $147 million (1.6 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases fell $3.9 million (0.1 percent), and salaries and wages rose $12 million (2.0 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
Professional, scientific, technical, administrative and support services
Total sales in this category were $20 billion, down $65 million (0.3 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases fell $206 million (2.1 percent), and salaries and wages rose $136 million (2.2 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
By industry the sales movements were:
- professional, scientific, and technical services – down $122 million (0.8 percent)
- administrative and support services – up $57 million (1.0 percent).
Education and training
Total sales in this category were $1.0 billion, up $9.1 million (0.9 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases rose $38 million (11 percent), and salaries and wages rose $38 million (8.5 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
Health care and social assistance
Total sales in this category were $6.0 billion, up $192 million (3.3 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases rose $224 million (8.9 percent), and salaries and wages rose $113 million (5.4 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
Arts, recreation, and other services
Total sales in this category were $4.8 billion, down $17 million (0.3 percent) from the June 2024 quarter. Actual purchases rose $6.4 million (0.2 percent), and salaries and wages rose $46 million (3.8 percent) in the September 2024 quarter compared with the September 2023 quarter.
By industry the sales movements were:
- arts and recreation services – down $59 million (3.6 percent)
- other services – up $42 million (1.3 percent).
