Labour market statistics (income): June 2024 quarter
Labour market statistics (income) reports on information about income collected annually from the Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS). It provides information about individual and household income, including wages and salaries, self-employment, and government transfers income, both at an aggregate level and for subpopulations of interest.
27 August 2024: We have reinstated the three paragraphs immediately under the gender pay gap graph. They reflect the correct gender pay gap figure of 8.2 percent.
21 August 2024: We have corrected an error in the gender pay gap figure. The figure is 8.2 percent, not 8.1 percent as originally published in the text. We have also removed the three paragraphs immediately under the gender pay gap graph that referred to the Household Labour Force Survey sampling error parameters. We will correct and update this information as soon as possible.

Gender pay gap at 8.2 percent
The gender pay gap is based on median hourly wage and salary earnings for men and women, and was at 8.2 percent in the June 2024 quarter compared with 8.5 percent the previous year. However, this was not a statistically significant change.
As the Household Labour Force Survey is a sample survey, and does not interview every person in New Zealand, a small amount of uncertainty is expected for any estimates produced. This uncertainty is often represented as sample errors, which show the bounds of confidence an estimate lies in, and can be used to understand whether a genuine (or statistically significant) change has occurred.
With an estimate of 8.2 percent, the gender pay gap had a sampling error of about 1.6 percentage points in the June 2024 quarter. This means we are largely confident that the gender pay gap lies between 6.6 and 9.8 percent.

Note: A gender pay gap of 0 percent would imply no difference in earnings between men and women. This measure does not consider factors that could influence differences in earnings, such as occupation, qualifications gained, age, and hours worked.
