New Zealand’s environmental reporting series: Environment Aotearoa 2022

New Zealand’s environmental reporting series: Environment Aotearoa 2022 presents information on the state of New Zealand's environment. Environment Aotearoa 2022 is a synthesis report, drawing together content from the most recent environmental indicators, previous domain reports, and peer-reviewed scientific literature.

This series is co-published by Stats NZ and the Ministry for the Environment.

About the report

The Environmental Reporting Act 2015 requires the Ministry for the Environment and Stats NZ to produce a report every six months focused on a different environmental ‘domain’ – air, atmosphere and climate, fresh water, land, and marine environment – and after those, to produce a synthesis report.

Environment Aotearoa 2022 is implementing some of the changes recommended by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, including the 'decoupling' of indicators from reports to allow more timely analysis and publication of new data.

The report is framed around the nine stars of Matariki, and mātauranga Māori – Māori knowledge – stands alongside indicator findings to give a richer view of the environment. There is a strong focus in the report on how human activity affects the environment and how this in turn can affect our wellbeing.
