Stats NZ

Gender, sex, and intersex

This page links to statistics and information by sex or gender, and to information about people with variations in sex characteristics, also known as intersex.

Our statistics in the past were always broken down by sex. These statistics are still available on our website. However, the introduction of the new statistical standard for gender, sex, and variations of sex characteristics from 21 April 2021 means the information you’ll find on our website will broaden.

From April 2021, our surveys will collect gender information and will only ask for information about sex where it is relevant to the purpose of the survey or necessary as part of a two-step process (along with gender) for publishing data on the transgender population. When we collect information about a person’s sex, we will ask for their sex at birth in line with the standard.

Data standard for gender, sex, and variations of sex characteristics provides definitions and methodology for collecting the data.

Gender, sex, variations of sex characteristics, and sexual identity has more information about the topics we collect on LBGTQI+ and Rainbow populations.
