Key facts
At 30 June 2017, the number of:
- dairy cattle was 6.5 million, down 2 percent from 2016.
- sheep was 27.5 million, down 1 percent from 2016.
- beef cattle was 3.6 million, up 2 percent from 2016.
The kiwifruit canopy area was 11,000 hectares at 30 June 2017, no change from the last survey in 2014. Note the 2014 reported result for the canopy area of kiwifruit has been revised down by 9 percent or 1,000 hectares.
For the year ended 31 March 2017, total exotic timber harvested was 27.1 million cubic metres, up 7 percent from both 2016 and 2012.
Revisions
On 28 February 2018 we made some revisions to the age breakdowns of different stock types, with beef cattle variables the most significantly affected. Note that overall totals (eg total beef cattle, total dairy cattle) have not changed. The 2017 data is provisional, with final figures to be released on 8 May 2018.
