Key facts
- In July 2019, the seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings consented fell 1.3 percent, after falling 4.0 percent in June 2019. These falls follow a strong 15 percent rise in May 2019.
- In the year ended July 2019, the actual number of new dwellings consented was 35,472, up 8.0 percent from the July 2018 year.
- The annual value of non-residential building work consented was $7.6 billion, up 11 percent from the July 2018 year.
New dwelling consents
In July 2019, 3,420 new dwellings were consented, comprising:
- 2,101 stand-alone houses
- 652 townhouses, flats, and units
- 513 apartments
- 154 retirement village units.
The seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings consented fell 1.3 percent from June 2019. For stand-alone houses only, the seasonally adjusted number rose 4.8 percent.
By region, the numbers of new dwellings consented in the year ended July 2019 (compared with the July 2018 year) were:
- 14,236 in Auckland – up 11 percent
- 4,102 in Waikato – up 19 percent
- 2,724 in Wellington – down 0.4 percent
- 5,726 in rest of North Island – up 1.4 percent
- 5,081 in Canterbury – up 7.5 percent
- 3,596 in rest of South Island – up 4.0 percent.
Non-residential building consents
In the year ended July 2019, the value of non-residential building consents was $7.6 billion, up 11 percent from the July 2018 year. This series can be influenced by price changes – non-residential construction prices (as measured by the capital goods price index) were up 4.3 percent in the June 2019 year.
In the July 2019 year (compared with the July 2018 year), the non-residential building types with the highest values were:
- social, cultural, and religious buildings – $1.1 billion (up 62 percent)
- shops, restaurants, and bars – $1.0 billion (up 2.3 percent)
- education buildings – $1.0 billion (down 11 percent).
