Household living-costs price indexes: September 2020 quarter

Household living-costs price indexes (HLPIs) provide insights into the inflation experienced by 13 different household groups: beneficiaries, Māori, income quintiles (five groups), expenditure quintiles (five groups), and superannuitants. We publish an all-households HLPI for comparison.

2 June 2021: We have revised the expenditure weights CSV file as some of the 2020 income quintile 4 weights have been missing from it since June 2020. We added in the missing weights and have revised the 2017 weights which were incorrect in the table.

New weights after 2020 Household living-costs price indexes review

This quarter we implemented the 2020 household living-costs price indexes (HLPIs) review. Every three years, we review the consumers price index to ensure the index remains relevant. This review impacts the HLPIs as they are heavily linked. As spending patterns change over time for various households’ groups, we update our expenditure weights in the basket of goods and services. This ensures we are accurately tracking the price changes different households are experiencing. See Household living-costs price indexes review: 2020 for more information.
