Subnational population estimates: At 30 June 2018 (provisional)

Subnational population estimates give the best available measure of the population, by age and sex, usually living in New Zealand's 16 regions, 67 territorial authority areas, 21 Auckland local board areas, and other areas.

Population estimates give the best available measure of the size and age-sex make-up of the population usually living in each area.

The estimated resident population at 30 June 2013–18 is based on the 2013 Census usually resident population count.

Key facts

In the June 2018 year, estimates of the population usually living in each area indicate: 

  • All 16 of New Zealand’s regions experienced population growth.
  • Auckland (2.3 percent), Otago (2.2 percent), Northland (2.1 percent), and Canterbury (2.0 percent) regions grew faster than the national average (1.9 percent).
  • Auckland made up 35 percent of New Zealand’s population, and accounted for over 42 percent of total population growth.
  • 66 of the 67 territorial authority areas had population growth.
  • The fastest-growing territorial authority areas were the Queenstown-Lakes (5.5 percent) and Selwyn (4.8 percent) districts.
  • Median age varied across New Zealand, from 31.8 years (Hamilton) to 53.1 years (Thames-Coromandel).

Subnational population estimates: At 30 June 2018 (final) will be published on 15 November 2018 on NZ.Stat. This release will show 2017 and 2018 geographic boundaries.

Estimates in this release and in the November release are based on 2013 Census results and estimated population change since then. Revised population estimates will be released in 2019 after 2018 Census results are available.
