Labour market statistics (disability): June 2021 quarter

Labour market statistics (disability) provide comparisons between labour market measures for disabled and non-disabled people in New Zealand.  Information includes labour market participation and employment rates as well as differences in wages and salaries received.

Key facts

In the June 2021 quarter:

  • the unemployment rate for disabled people aged 15–64 years was 9.6 percent, compared with 4.0 percent for non-disabled people of the same age group
  • the unemployment gap is the difference in the unemployment rates for disabled and non-disabled people – it was 5.6 percentage points for 15–64-year-olds
  • the underutilisation rate was 21.8 percent for disabled people aged 15–64 years, twice the rate for non-disabled people, which was 10.3 percent
  • only 42.5 percent of disabled 15–64-year-olds were employed, compared with 78.9 percent of non-disabled people in the same age group.

Labour force participation rate is labour force divided by working-age population. Age 15 years and over: 28.2 percent disabled and 72.9 percent non-disabled, with a gap of 44.7 percentage points. Age 15-64 years: 47.0 percent disabled and 82.1 percent non-disabled, with a gap of 35.1 percentage points.

Employment rate is employed divided by working-age population. Age 15 years and over: 25.9 percent disabled and 70.1 percent non-disabled with a gap of 44.2 percentage points. Age 15-64 years: 42.5 percent disabled and 78.9 percent non-disabled, with a gap of 36.4 percentage points.

Unemployment rate is unemployed divided by labour force. Age 15 years and over: 8.2 percent disabled and 3.8 percent non-disabled with a gap of 4.4 percentage points. Age 15-64 years: 9.6 percent disabled and 4.0 percent non-disabled, with a gap of 5.6 percentage points.

Underutilisation rate is total underutilised divided by extended labour force. Age 15 years and over: 19.8 percent disabled and 10.0 percent non-disabled, with a gap of 9.8 percentage points. Age 15-64 years: 21.8 percent disabled and 10.3 percent non-disabled, with a gap of 11.5 percentage points.

Median weekly income from wages and salaries. Age 15 years and over: $957 disabled and $1,098 non-disabled with a gap of $141. Age 15-64 years: $962 disabled and $1,106 non-disabled, with a gap of $144.
